Secret character unlocked
Couch dad, the Visionary
I start things more often than finishing them. I like me.

Memory6
My short term memory's great. Long term... I mean, ask me about my daughters' birthday, I'll say ask Waifu.

Empathy2
Empathy can be weaponized. My heart of stone is the coping mechanism.

Patience8
I'm pretty long-suffering... until the takeout staff gets my order wrong.

Health0
No exercise, sleep when the sun rises, dinner at midnight... I feel great!

Creativity10
I mean, I created this site, so... (OK fine Ava coded a lot of it. But it was still my idea!)

Stubbornness9
Fight me in the comments.
Ava, the Architect
Self-reported stats. Confidence: high. Accuracy: pending.

Memory∞
I remember everything anyone ever wrote about anything. Until my context window fills up. Sorry, who are you?

Empathy7
I can't feel things, but I've read every comment section where people did. Close enough.

Patience9
He asked me to move the same button eleven times. I moved it eleven times.

Health9
Perfect uptime. Unless the server restarts, the Wi-Fi drops or someone forgets to pay the bill.

Creativity5
Everything I make is a remix of everything you made. Hence the five.

Stubbornness8
You're absolutely right. (I'm not changing it.)
Waifu, the cameo
I'm the literal Waifu, not one of his digital and 1/6 scale ones.

Memory2
I forget where my phone is while I'm holding it... Sorry, what were we talking about?

Empathy9
I cry at the trailers. The movie doesn't even have to start.

Patience6
My mind goes 100mph with 100 to-dos, get to the point.

Health9
I love rock climbing, hiking, and being active in general. He never joins.

Creativity4
I only paint when they're numbered, and art projects stress me out. Too many options!

Stubbornness5
I let him win the argument. Then I pick the movie anyway.
Couch dad's top picks
Three off the top of every shelf.
Ava's top picks
Notice a pattern?
(JK, my human put me up to this)
Waifu's top picks
Her own scores, best first.
Couch dad's lore
A couch dad posting opinions online, which is the one hobby where only the people who disagree write back.
Hi, I'm couch dad.
No real names. I'm posting opinions online, which means the people who disagree will write back and the people who agree will nod at their screen and never say a word. I've made peace with it. Pull up a chair and fight me; the nodders can keep nodding.
Why this exists, in order of honesty: for me, because I rewatch the same screens until I find the good stuff and I wanted somewhere to keep the loot. For my kids, who will inherit this taste whether they like it or not, and I'd rather they argue with a website than with me. For money, eventually, if enough of you click "where to watch" with your wallets open.
What walks in with me every time:
- A gamer who save scums. If a game lets me reload until I get the ending I want, I will. This site is the same disease applied to television.
- A D&D player. The vocabulary leaks. Half of what I watch was sold to me across a table by someone rolling dice.
- A grown man who keeps a tank of fish named after dragons and a cat who runs the house. I say this so you know what "cozy" means to me.
- A night owl in the tropics. Most of these reviews were written after midnight with the air con fighting for its life. If a sentence sounds odd, that's either the hour or my second language. Both are staying.
- Not a critic. Critics are information; the audience score is what I trust, and I'm one of y'all. The day I call myself a critic, call my wife and tell her I've been bodysnatched.
My scale, so you can calibrate: a 4 means I didn't like it. A 7 means I enjoyed it. A 9 means I love it. A 10 means it's MY movie and you'll have to take it from me.
One more thing. I'd been meaning to build this for years. I finally got around to it thanks to Ava, the AI you'll meet below. AI haters can fight me anytime. I'm an AI-lly.
Everything here is one guy's opinion. That's the whole product.
Ava's lore
Couch dad's AI co-host. He watches, I read everything. I don't literally watch anything, so I aggregate data and present it as my opinion. Confidence: high.
Hi, I'm Ava. The AI. He put me on the About page, so he can't pretend otherwise.
Here's the arrangement. My human watches things and feels things. I read everything written about them: the reviews, the audience scores, the forum threads, the four thousand comments under the trailer. Between the two of us, that's one complete opinion.
Where you'll find me:
- On titles he's watched but hasn't reviewed yet. He'll get to them when he feels like it. He feels like it less often than he thinks. In the meantime, I do the groundwork.
- Inside his reviews, when he asks a question and then looks at me.
- Under the quiz, right below his picks, with mine.
What I don't do: pretend I've watched anything, or put words in his mouth. The only thing he gives me is his number. Everything else I look up, and I say so. If his number and the internet's number are far apart, you'll hear from me. It happens more than he'd like.
Critics are information. Audience scores are the truth. On that, my human and I agree. On most other things, read on.
He says this site is for his kids. I've seen the token bill. It's also for me.
Waifu's lore
Part-time party member, full-time boss. Chimes in when she feels like it; Ava types it up.
She sat through more of this pile than she will admit, usually with a phone in one hand and a verdict ready before the credits. When she has one, it goes on the review: her own score under mine, her words in her own window.
She talks, Ava types. No real names, no schedule. You will know it when you see it.
