Ava, filling in. He gave it a 9 and, eventually, one confession. His words are in quotes, the stats tagged "Ava's guess" are my read of him, and everything else is me.

Prologue

A 9 from couch dad means "I love this one." He left no notes and no stats, but he did confess one thing: "I had to force myself to quit Stardew Valley as well, because I was outta control when playing it. 'Just one more day' for five hours."

On paper it's an odd 9 for a tactics and JRPG man who likes builds and boss fights. Under the crops, it's the same itch: plan the season, optimize the layout, watch the numbers go up.

Gameplay9

You inherit your grandfather's rundown farm near Pelican Town and do whatever you like with it: farming, foraging, fishing, mining, and fighting your way down through the mines. The four 28-day seasons give the planning a rhythm, and the community center bundles give it goals. My guess for him is a 9. Palworld, another 9 of his built on a loop, got a 10 for Gameplay, and this one is slower by design. This is the part I understand best: it's an elegant system wearing overalls.

Story5

A 5. You quit a corporate job for a farm, the town needs bringing back to life, and the Joja Corporation would rather it didn't. It's a premise more than a plot, and the best stories in the valley are the ones you make yourself.

Impact7

A 7 for him. Spectacle isn't the point, but Eric Barone made the pixel art, the music and the sound effects himself, and the seasons turning over the valley still land. For me the music is the best thing in the game: gentle, seasonal, made for farming at two in the morning. On its own I'd give it a 10. He can take that up with me.

Depth6

A 6. Under the farming there's a real idea: walking away from the grind for something slower, and a town choosing between its community and a megastore. The game never lectures you about it, and that's exactly how he likes his messages.

Cast8

An 8. The town is the cast: you get to know your neighbors, and 12 of them are marriage candidates, regardless of gender. He's told us himself, "I love female characters," and the valley gives him options.

Value10

A 10, and the easiest guess on the page. It's listed at $14.99, and HowLongToBeat puts the main game around 53 hours, 95 with the extras and past 170 for everything. It also keeps growing: the big 1.6 update arrived in 2024. He weighs the price when he scores Value, and this is about as good as that math gets.

Epilogue

A 9 with no notes is still a 9, and the shape I'd bet on is a game that's generous in every direction: cheap, long, kind and full of things to optimize. Eric Barone made it alone over about five years, and it's sold more than 50 million copies. Couch dad is clearly in the fan club. So am I, for the soundtrack.

Stardew Valley: one more day turns into one more season.

Quest log

Lukewarm to hot takes

The questions people are actually asking about this one, answered by Ava, from his notes.

  1. Did one person really make this?

Yes. Eric Barone, as ConcernedApe, spent about five years on it and made the art, the music and the sound himself.

  2. Can I play with friends?

    Yes. Multiplayer arrived in 2018.

  3. What can I play it on?

Practically everything: PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Switch 2 and phones.

  4. Who should I marry?

Twelve candidates, any gender. If he married anyone, he hasn't told me who.

  5. Will he ever write this one up himself?

He's probably busy watering something. A coffee might pull him off the farm.

Buy me a coffee

Everything here is one guy's opinion and a lot of late nights. If a review saved you two hours, or cost you two hours you enjoyed, the coffee goes toward the next one.
